LaneStory is an app about children. That shapes every decision below: the app is built so that we do not hold your family's data in the first place, rather than promising to look after it carefully.

We do not have an account system

There is no sign-up, no login and no profile on our servers. You can install the app and use it without telling us who you are. Because there is no account, there is nothing for us to link your activity to.

What stays on your device

Everything you create in the app is stored locally on your phone:

  • The swimmers, clubs and meets you follow
  • Nicknames, birth years and any photo you choose for a swimmer
  • Your season goals and qualifying targets
  • Notification preferences, including which swimmers are muted
  • Cached results, so the app opens quickly and works with poor reception

None of this is transmitted to us. If you delete the app, it is gone. If you use your device's own encrypted backup, it is included in that backup under your control, not ours.

Where the swimming data comes from

Meet programmes, start lists, live timing and results are published by the national swimming federations and their timing partners. LaneStory reads that published data and presents it. We do not add to it, correct it, or submit anything on your behalf.

Results are public sports records. A swimmer's name, club, birth year and times appear in LaneStory because the federation has already published them on the open web. LaneStory does not make any information public that was not already public, and following a swimmer in the app is invisible to that swimmer and to everyone else.

If you want a result removed

We cannot remove a result from LaneStory alone, because we read it from the federation each time rather than storing our own copy. A correction has to happen at the source. Write to support@lanestory.com and we will tell you which body publishes the record and how to reach them.

Children

LaneStory is designed to be used by a parent or guardian, not by a young child. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children โ€” the app has no mechanism to do so. The swimmers a family follows are stored only on that family's device.

Notifications

Race-day reminders are scheduled locally by your phone based on the meet programme the app has already downloaded. We do not operate a push server and cannot see whether a notification was delivered or opened.

Analytics and advertising

There is no advertising in LaneStory and no third-party advertising or tracking SDK. This website uses privacy-preserving traffic measurement that sets no cookies and does not build a profile of visitors.

Payments

LaneStory Plus is sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Your payment details are handled entirely by Apple or Google โ€” we never see a card number, and we receive only the anonymous subscription status needed to unlock the features you paid for.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have rights of access, correction, erasure and portability over personal data a company holds about you. In our case the honest answer is that we hold none: no account, no server-side profile, no analytics identity. If you believe we hold something about you, write to us and we will answer specifically rather than with a form letter.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, we will say so in the app's release notes rather than only editing this page.
